Analysing Lyrics to Make Graphics, Not As Fun but Better for more Accurate-to-Topic Graphics.

This is my second task for my music project! For this, we have been asked to analyse some of our favourite non-signed artists so we can make a “Look” for them. For this task, I have chosen a band called Mind Shrine. To start this all though, we have been asked to look at one of our chosen artist’s songs to see the meaning of the song, which will help us in making the graphic more accurate to the topic of the song, along with putting images with the lyrics.

But before we do any of that, we should have a look at what song I have chosen to try and see what Mind Shrine’s story is. This is an indie band that makes quite relaxing music that I like to listen to. My favourite album from them is called “Is It You?” and I would have done that album but sadly I couldn’t find the lyrics on genius for any of the songs on there, so instead I will be doing “Again” from their EP “Mind Shrine – EP”

EP by Mind Shrine, Edited on Photoshop - 2022

This is an Indie song that talks about waiting for somebody to come back from somewhere, with lyrics such as “I’m waiting for you”. We can also assume that they’re somewhere else since the lyrics ask questions like “Did you get the tea and flowers I sent to your room?” At the end of the song though, with lyrics talking about how if they would have stayed, they would have been there forever, to then saying that they will meet this person again, we could assume that this is referring to their partner being dead. We can also assume this because of the same lyric “Sitting on a chair with a mirror I’m waiting for you” which could be referring to ghosts, since of the famous Bloody Mary challenge people used to do, where they would look into a mirror, call her name three times, and for her to then appear. I say that this is an indie song also because, well, they aren't signed to a record label, since indie means independent artist. To speak less on the meaning of the song and instead to move more to the sound, we have quite a flowy twangy guitar that rides with you throughout the entire song, along with the overall sound, well for me, a summers day with its uplifting drums and prominent crashes, along with the softly sung vocals.

That’s enough for analysing though, lets's attach some images to these. Now, when choosing these images, I’ve also been listening to the song repeatedly to make sure these graphics are perfect.

Pinterest Board for the Song Again, Edited on Photoshop - 2022

Now, you may see quite a chill sort of vibes from these, this is because that’s what I feel in this song, a kind of lounge-y, warm tone from the guitar, and that almost tropical feeling is also captured with some of these pictures. I also felt like this was a bright but warm-coloured song, so I made sure to add graphics of softer edged graphics with an almost cartoonish feel along with these warmer tones. You might also notice some of the guitars, this is because the main riff of the guitar really inspired me to add a classic electric guitar to the board.

Now, what do I think of this research? I think this is some good research because it was quite fun to make whilst also being accurate to the song's overall feel, which is what I was aiming for.

Was it successful? Yes. I now have some good ideas for what this final product could look like, and for me, that is exactly what research is supposed to do.

What would I do differently? I don’t think I would have done anything differently at all. From listening to the song whilst I was collecting the images, to choosing these warmer tones for the board, everything went well.

How could I develop this further? I could by adding more images. To be more specific, I think I would add warmer-toned images, or like comfy beds since that’s what makes me think of the song. I would also add more mirrors to the board since that’s a key part of the song.

Is this something I would revisit in the future? I don’t think so. This board is very specific to the task at hand, so I wouldn’t assume that this would be applicable to other tasks. But, if we are talking about my song analysis, I think I will.
