Pattern Swatches in Adobe Illustrator, A really fun tool.

Updated: Dec 3, 2022

This blog post is all about my experience and final product using the Pattern Tool in Adobe Illustrator. To give a simple TLDR (Too Long Didn't Read), I first made a separate drawing on a different artboard, and after taking a good amount f time to make it, I put it into a different artboard to start turning it into a pattern. I used the half drop in a square formation, along with adding confetti to the background to make sure it doesn't feel too empty when looking at such. I also made four versions of various sizing, so you can have a variety depending on what the product that needs the pattern is.

Kitty Boy Birthday patterns 1, 2, 3 and 4, made in Adobe Illustrator - 2022

What do I think of the work that I have produced? I think this is quite good. I really like the character I've drawn, I'll name them kitty boy, after the kitty boy graphics brand! But anyways, The colours are very vibrant which, for me, really fits the party theme, along with the balloon that also reflects upon the theme of party, since we've been guided to make a digital pattern associated with the theme of party

Was it successful? absolutely! the brief the was part is very open-ended, so it's actually quite hard to make something that doesn't exactly match the brief, and this really does. The pattern also matches up to a point, so I think I'll give myself another point there.

What would I do differently if I had the chance? This is quite simple, I would fix the little gap you can see between each column to make sure they match up perfectly, but apart from that I think the pattern is perfect, maybe I would change the background depending on what the task at hand needs, but Ince I like to keep consistent, I have my iconic beige as the background with a lovely circle to fame the pattern.

How would I develop this moving forward? I think I would bring to print this out as wrapping paper in a couple of different colours and possibly materials like chrome, I would also probably make copies where kitty boy is in a different pose or doing a different activity, like blowing out candles. apart from this though, I'm not too sure what else I would do.

Is this something I would revisit in the future? I think so. It's quite simple to do and very effective with making patterns as a whole, it's definitely a field I can see myself getting into more since it's such a simple recipe with so much opportunity.
