Repeat Pattern, An Assignment.

Updated: Dec 3, 2022

So, for this assignment, I have had a choice of making two assorted products, either making a graphic for packaging, or making some graphics that are repeat patterns, and from these two options, I’ve chosen repeating patterns, but why? This is because I simply find patterns more interesting to make. You can use so many mediums to make them, and you can make them by the dozen, and with how I form ideas which are they come, and they go, its fun to get the full idea down in a shorter amount of time, I just prefer patterns over packaging.

Now, the research I’ve done. I first knew I wanted to try something to do with food. This is because at the time I was hungry I will be honest, but I did such still. I made a Pinterest board to try and find what sort of party foods would be good for this, and I found quite a few, but they didn’t have my attention like what party rings did.

Pinterest Board I Made for Inspiration, Edited in Photoshop - 2022

So, what do I think of the research that I have done here? I think it's quite safe in all due respects, it's nothing revolutionary in the slightest and ow effort if I am putting on two cents in, but despite this, I still think this is okay.

Do I think this has been successful? No, not really. Although I really do like the images that I have chosen for this board, to me it reminds me of the food I would have If I were to have on my own birthday, but none of it really inspired me to make other patterns except the party rings, but that’s because they’re my favourite bisects.

What would I do differently? I think I would try and look for more snack-based party food like party rings or try and find party foods in the same colours as party rings, or even just put more unhealthy food on there, since quite a bit of the food I healthy, and I am to too sure I, it being healthy isn’t inspiring me, or I just don’t find them as visually interesting as a party ring.

How could I develop this further? This is a simple one, to simply put on more images that I find visually interesting enough to inspire me to make more patterns from this board.

Is this something I would come back to? No. This is because, for me, it’s too specific to be used with other briefs, but that can change if I find a brief that really sticks out to me.

Now, it's time for the first idea. Now, I'm not going to have too much-added text with these images, and that’s because they have quite a bit of text in themselves anyway.

Design Drawings, Edited in Photoshop - 2022

These are the visualisation diagrams I made for this design, as you can see I have made three designs. I liked the first two, but not as much as the third design, and so I wanted to make design 3 into an actual final product compared to the other two. This is mainly because of the less directness of the product placement, so it doesn’t feel as in your face, and more of an “oh yeah I recognise that that’s Party Rings!”

But I’ve had enough of talking about how I've made my final pieces, let me show you!

Final Products for Assignment, Made in Illustrator - 2022

These are the final outcomes! As you can see, they have come out similarly to how I drew them in my visualisation diagram. We have our pink and yellow, our orange and lighter orange along with our purple and green!

Now, what did work here? Just about everything, really. The pattern is quite interesting to look at, with the more supple colour or the orange makes it better to use for bigger packaging or products like background, or a party table cloth to make sure you don’t get any crumbs on your table, whilst the brighter pink and yellow along with purple and green could be used for smaller objects that need some sort of punch to make them stand out, like perhaps a party hat, or a confetti popper housing. The shape as well also came out quite nice and, at least for me, reminds me of party rings with the iconic colourways of their confectionaries along with their distinct lining to make it more than a plain coloured ring.

Now, what didn’t work for this? I have fixed these problems in the final design, which is this, but I shall talk about them in detail still. One unsuccessful design flaw that I fixed was how the pattern, well, patterned. As you know, during my design phase I wanted to make this a brick repeat pattern to make it more visually interesting, but looking at the graphic with this made it feel far too busy for what it already is. I feel like I could have gotten away with it on the orange colourway, and despite this, the brick repeat in the field didn’t work. One other thing that didn’t work was when I was making it, with the execution of how I tried to make the round pattern. I was first trying to use the pen tool, but this was quite time-consuming since it all had to be perfect, so rather than doing it painstakingly, I decided to try the shapes tool instead, and mess around with the sizing along with the rounding edge function of the tool, and it worked like a shark, and gave me exactly what I was looking for.

So, the task overall, how was it? For myself? Quite frankly it has been fun! Looking for inspiration, messing with tools to come out with quite a clean-looking graphic aimed towards the 18-25 crowd who is looking for more classy party-inspired products that don’t scream cheap.

What things do I think have gone well with this project? I think the design phase must be my favourite part of the project because I will admit, I take pride in my visualisation diagrams with how technical and complex they can be for their specific purpose.

So, what hasn’t gone so well about this project overall? You might be surprised to hear, but quite a bit. At first, I didn’t exactly show my design development. I didn’t do this because I just straight up forgot to show and haven't documented it at all, and with this being a part of a couple of keynotes of this project, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lower-than-expected score. With this too, my research has been quite lacklustre with a single Pinterest board showing for research, when I could have gone into many different fields to get more inspiration to make overall better, more innovative ideas. My final designs are quite nice, but to me, I don’t think they have been well-developed enough, I can see these as being close to the final product, but that doesn’t mean it is or should be the final product. Speaking of the final product, although I do like the simple show of the pattern, I feel like I could have evaluated the by using mockups to show what it could look like when being used in physical products.
